A Washington man wanted by the Ohio County, W.Va., sheriff’s department for reportedly trying to steal copper from a mine earlier this year was taken into custody by city police during a traffic stop Thursday night.

Trevor A. Smith, 29, of 720 W. Chestnut St., was stopped in the 400 block of Allison Avenue for going through a stop sign. It was determined he was wanted on a felony warrant by West Virginia authorities.

A shift foreman at Tunnel Ridge Mine told deputies that Smith’s backpack was filled with stripped copper. When the foreman confronted him, Smith reportedly placed the backpack on the ground. Smith had been employed as a contractor at the mine.

Smith was arraigned before District Judge Mark Wilson as a fugitive from justice and placed in Washington County Jail without bond, pending extradition to West Virginia.
