Court: Former state lawmaker should pay more restitution

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A federal appeals court has ruled an imprisoned former state senator from Philadelphia should pay more restitution.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the court returned the case to U.S. District Judge Ronald L. Buckwalter to decide precisely how much former state Sen. Vincent Fumo should pay. It suggested as much as an additional $800,000.
The once powerful Democratic lawmaker has been serving a five-year sentence after being convicted in 2009 of defrauding the Senate, a neighborhood nonprofit and a seaport museum.
Two years ago, Buckwalter ordered Fumo and a former aide convicted with him to split about $1.6 million in restitution due a South Philadelphia civic-improvement organization. Federal prosecutors say Fumo should pay almost all of it himself.
Fumo’s lawyer says he hopes the judge doesn’t put the entire load on his client.
