Millsboro dentist sentenced for prescription drug fraud

A Millsboro dentist accused of fraudulently prescribing more than 6,600 painkiller pills to seven people recently pleaded guilty and is headed for prison.
Dr. Charles M. Kokoska Jr., 49, of 2 Mill St., pleaded guilty last week before Washington County Judge John DiSalle and was sentenced to 30 to 60 months in state prison on seven counts of distribution by a practitioner and two counts of provider prohibited acts, court records show.
In addition to a dental office at his home, Kokoska also practiced at an office at 161 Waterdam Road, McMurray.
Attorney General Linda Kelly said the prescriptions were written for the prescription painkillers oxycodone, hydrocodone and propoxyphene as well as for diazepam, a generic form of Xanax, and were filled at various pharmacies in Washington, Greene, Allegheny and Fayette counties.
In October 2010, agents of the attorney general’s office carried out search warrants and obtained records that lacked the documentation required to support the prescribing of a controlled substance.
According to court documents, Kokoska admitted his actions were “below the accepted medical treatment standards.”
About 300 prescriptions were written between January 2009 and October 2010 to the seven patients. Diane Kokoska, the dentist’s ex-wife, was reportedly among them. Court documents indicate search warrants produced no patient records for her.
The federal Drug Enforcement Administration assisted with the investigation.
