Reward offered in McNerney case through Crime Stoppers
Washington police are hoping that a $2,000 reward offered through Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers may help them find the person or persons responsible for the Oct. 4 death of a Washington & Jefferson College student.
The reward is being offered for information in the death of 21-year-old Tim McNerney.
McNerney was killed in an apparent robbery attempt as he and his roommate walked back to campus from a South Main Street tavern just after 2 a.m. McNerney, who was a running back on the school’s football team, suffered a blow to his head after being shoved or tackled to the ground. His roommate, Zach DeCicco, was able to break free after sustaining a broken nose and cuts and bruises in the attack. He was not able to tell police what happened to his friend. McNerney was found several hours later off South College Street and East Maiden Street. His cellphone was missing. McNerney died a short time later at Washington Hospital.
While it was initially believed that McNerney and DeCicco might have been attacked by a group of people, police said they now feel it was a smaller group.
“We are inching along in the investigation,” said city police Lt. Dan Stanek. “We have eliminated several people. While it may not seem like progress, it is.”
“Whoever did this may not realize what happened,” he added. “I would hope that the attacker confided in someone who may come forward with information and give us a break in the case.”
