A fire Sunday morning that heavily damaged one Canonsburg home also caused some damage to siding and windows to crack on a neighboring house.

Fire Chief Tom Lawrence said a state police fire marshal ruled the fire that heavily damaged 255 Smithfield St. was accidental. Also damaged was the house at 253 Smithfield.

The fire, reported at 6:45 a.m., started on the front porch and spread to the inside of the house, Lawrence said. A front bedroom and living room were damaged. The house is owned by Steve Svitek and was occupied by three tenants.

No injuries were reported. Lawrence estimated damage to the building at $40,000 and another $10,000 damage to the contents.

Houston firefighters assisted at the scene. Also assisting were Canonsburg Ambulance personnel, Salvation Army and American Red Cross.
