WAYNESBURG – The Central Greene School Board voted 5-4 to enter into a contract with Howard Hanna Premier Properties to list Perry Elementary School property for sale.

The property was previously advertised by the district on several occasions. Among the bids received were a low bid of $40,000 and a high bid of $355,000 if the mineral rights were included. That was never an option, and was specifically spelled out in the advertised bid request.

Board members John Bristor, Andrew Corfont, Samuel Watson and Roberta Boyd voted against the motion to enter into the agreement with the realtor. Bristor inquired if there was a length of time the agreement would be in place. When he learned it would be for at least a year, he questioned if the district received an offer during this time frame if it could be accepted without utilizing the services of Howard Hanna commercial realtor, Sam Bossio. Business manager Deborah Crouse said it could not.

Regarding the Margaret Bell Miller Middle School exterior wall repair project, the board accepted a low bid of $34,000 from Excaliber Construction of Hickory. This was the second time the project was advertised for bids. In June the district received a low bid that was twice the amount allotted for the project.

The annual contribution from Central Greene School District to the Intermediate Unit 1 operating budget decreased by $1,720.94 to $19,870.63 for the 2013-14 school year. The overall budget for IU1 for 2013-14 is $2,024,659.

Regarding professional employees, the board approved maternity leave for three Waynesburg Central High School teachers. Megan Pierce, Keira McCabe and Katy McCracken will take leave in May. McCabe and McCracken will return in time for the start of the 2013-14 school year. Pierce will utilize family medical leave for the first nine weeks of the 2013-14 school year and then return to work.

The board also approved a paternity leave for Waynesburg Central High School teacher, Matthew Brandstetter, on or about May 13, utilizing Brandstetter’s accumulated sick days. He will return to work on or about May 28.

Other professional staff recommendations accepted by the board were the addition of environmental education substitute Lee Wright and chemistry, general science and physics substitute Adam Held.

The board acknowledged a tentative intent to retire at the end of the 2013-14 school year by elementary librarian Caren Kulchock.

In other personnel related matters, the board approved multiple transfer requests. Brenda Dulaney will transfer from her afternoon shift janitor/security position at Margaret Bell Miller Middle School to the afternoon custodian position there. Susie Puthuff will transfer to her previous job as an afternoon shift janitor at Waynesburg Central High School from a janitor position in the elementary school. Ann Marie Pratt will transfer from a midnight shift janitor position at the high school to an afternoon shift janitor/security position at the elementary school. William Funk was accepted as a substitute bus driver for Fox School Bus Service and C.E. Bowers School Bus Service for the remainder of the school year.

The athletics/activities committee made several recommendations that were approved by the board. The resignation of Matthew Brandstetter as head cross country coach was accepted, effective immediately. The following coaches were approved: Joe Kijowski, head varsity girls soccer coach; Ed Cross, head 7th and 8th grade softball coach; Emily Bosworth, assistant 7th & 8th grade girls softball coach; Dave Benco, assistant varsity baseball coach; Jay Donley, volunteer assistant baseball coach; and volunteer assistant track coaches Ethan Hacker and Andrew Zahn. An athletic director internship was approved for Brian Knapp through California University of Pennsylvania.

The board agreed to participate in the Pennsylvania School Boards Association Executive Search Program to assist in a search for a new superintendent for the district. The position became vacant after the retirement of Superintendent Jerome Bartley in January.

Other administration recommendations approved by the board included participation in the summer food service program for 2013 and the weekend food program, effective immediately.
