Officials confirm rabid raccoon attacked dog in Peters Township

Tests have confirmed that a raccoon that attacked a dog in Peters Township earlier this month had rabies.
On Feb. 10, Peters Township police responded to a call from a resident of the 200 block of Stonebrooke Drive who heard a commotion outside and found the family dog with a raccoon hanging from its neck.
The resident killed the raccoon, and the carcass was picked up by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for testing, police said.
On Thursday, the USDA reported that the tests confirmed the raccoon was rabid.
The dog is current on its rabies vaccination and had a booster shot. It will be quarantined for 90 days at the resident’s home and must remain on a leash at all times when outdoors, police said.
The Department of Agriculture will conduct compliance checks to make sure the quarantine is being observed.
As a precaution, pet owners are encouraged to make sure their dogs and cats are up to date on their rabies vaccinations. Pet owners also should make every effort to keep their pets from coming into contact with wild animals.
