Wintry weather interfered with a class on crafts and food last month related to Slovak Mardi Gras, known as Fašiangy, but a make-up session has been rescheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the National Slovak Society, 351 Valley Brook Road, McMurray.

The pre-Lenten period lasting from the feast of the Three Kings, Jan. 6, until Ash Wednesday, is a festive time in Slovakia. Although much of the celebration is concentrated into the last few days called “Fasiangy” or “Blaznive Dni” crazy days, a carnival atmosphere persists throughout the season with entertainment, imbibing and overeating.

Students will learn to make one of the most popular Slovak Shrovetide treats, Ceregi, or fried dough knots, to take home. The featured craft will be pictures made from straw.

Workshops will be conducted by Lawrence Kozlowski, Slavic folklorist and author. The cost of $20 per person includes materials and light refreshments.

Participants can register by calling the NSS office at 1-800-488-1890.
