Lewis announces sheriff candidacy
Pennsylvania State Constable William Lewis Jr. announced Monday he will seek the Democratic nomination for the position of sheriff of Greene County in the May 21 primary.
Lewis, 53, of Cumberland Township, has served for 20 years as a state constable. As a constable, he said he has served a great number of warrants and transported many prisoners to and from the courts and jails.
Each year, Lewis said, he is required to complete 40 hours of continuing education, which includes training in criminal and civil law, first responder status and firearms qualifications. He said he also has been briefed and updated on crisis intervention and domestic violence.
For the last three years, Lewis also has served as deputy coroner for Greene County. In this position, he said he has received training in investigations and causes of death from the state attorney general’s office and the state Department of Health.
As deputy coroner, Lewis has participated in the investigations of homicides, suicides and deaths from natural causes.
Lewis said he was raised in a family that has a tradition of public service. According to Lewis, family members have served in law enforcement, as constables and in military service.
“I would be honored to continue this tradition as sheriff and would ask voters for their support on Election Day,” he said.
