Cumberland Township Police Wednesday amended the charges against a Nemacolin man to include a charge of attempted homicide.

James Matthew Eaton Baldwin, 32, of 110 Bliss Ave., was arrested on Feb. 15 for allegedly trying to kill his girlfriend, Felicia Crystal Walters, 26, at their residence. Baldwin was initially charged with aggravated assault.

Cumberland Township police Officer Bryan Smith said Baldwin told him he knew it was wrong but he needed to kill Walters so she would not hurt him or the kids anymore.

According to the criminal complaint, Baldwin then told Smith he had gotten on top of Walters while she was sleeping and used a knife to cut her throat. Smith said Baldwin then asked him if Walters was still alive.

According to the complaint, Baldwin told Smith his only regret was “killing the kids.” Baldwin clarified that he did not physically harm the children but he had killed them emotionally and told Smith they would never be the same.

Smith said he found Walters at the Bliss Avenue address with blood on her neck and chest areas and a puncture type wound to her neck.

According to the complaint, Walters told Smith Baldwin had climbed on top of her with the knife and said he was going to kill her. She said she pleaded with him not to, but he cut her on the right side of her neck, got off of her and left the residence.

An 8-inch serrated knife, allegedly used by Baldwin to cut Walters, was found on the kitchen counter of the home and taken into evidence, according to Smith.

Walters told him she had placed the knife there after Baldwin left. Walters was taken to Southwest Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Baldwin was arraigned before Greene County Magisterial District Judge Lee Watson. Bail was set at $100,000 straight cash and Baldwin remains in the Greene County jail. He faces additional charges of terroristic threats with intent to terrorize another, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
