To address the basics of large pond management, Dana Rizzo and Susan Boser, water resource educators with Penn State Extension, along with Tim Wood of Aquatic Edge Consulting will offer a workshop from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 13 at the Washington County Conservation District, 2800 N. Main St., Suite 105, Washington.

Ponds can provide many recreational benefits to homeowners, but they have their share of problems. Some may develop leaks or fill with sediment. The water may be muddy, or choked with weeds and algae. And sometimes, that big fish you hoped would be there for the kids to catch just doesn’t materialize.

During the program, the presenters will offer tips and advice on common pond problems and proper management. Typically, the most frequent questions involve the control of aquatic plants and weeds so time will be spent discussing how to identify and control nuisance plants and algae. There will also be discussion on the best kinds of fish to stock, the species to avoid and how to harvest to keep the populations balanced.

The cost of the program is $15 per person. Materials will be included. Register by sending your name, email, phone number and county to: Penn State Extension, Beaver County Office, 1000 Third St., Suite 3, Beaver, PA, 15009. Cash or checks made out to “PSCE of Beaver County” are accepted. For registration questions, call the Beaver County Extension office at 724-774-3003.

For more information on the program or on pond management, contact Dana Rizzo at 724-837-1402 or Susan Boser at 724-774-3003.
