YORK (AP) — Officers involved in the fatal shooting of a theft suspect outside a Kmart in central Pennsylvania have been cleared to return to duty.

Forty-year-old Todd William Shultz was shot and killed Saturday night by police responding to a report of a man with a knife stealing jewelry. Investigators say Shultz fought with the officers and pulled a knife after police used a stun gun on him.

Two officers then opened fire, killing Shultz.

The York Daily Record reports York County District Attorney Tom Kearney said Wednesday the officers appear to have acted appropriately and have been cleared to go back on duty. He says he reviewed reports and video of the scene.

Schultz’s mother, Gail Shultz, said her son was “a sweet boy” who was not aggressive or confrontational.
