Waynesburg police, investigating a counterfeit check cashed at First National Bank Dec. 3, uncovered a scam.

Police said a 19-year-old man seeking a job called a number in a newspaper advertisement for a baby-sitting position. He was told the position was filled but if he called another number he could be considered for a job as a secret shopper.

He called the number and was told he would be mailed a check for $1,900. He was instructed to cash the check and keep a portion of the money but send the rest by Western Union to an address in the Phillippines. After he did that, he was instructed to cancel the Western Union check and send another check by Money Gram to an address in Nigeria.

Police said the man will not be charged but will have to repay the bank for the counterfeit check.
