A North Strabane Township police sergeant was slightly injured early Monday when his marked sport utility vehicle was hit from behind by a car driven by a drunken driving suspect in Canonsburg.

Kyle E. Tarr, 23, of 47A S. Johnson Road, Houston, faces a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol after allegedly hitting the police cruiser driven by Sgt. Keith Hutter.

Hutter was in the westbound lane while stopped for a red light on West Pike Street at Strabane Avenue about 2 a.m. when Tarr’s car slammed the Ford Expedition from behind, Canonsburg police said. Police asked Tarr what happened, but he reportedly told the officers he could not remember.

Tarr got out of his car and had difficulty standing, police said. He also reportedly smelled of an alcoholic beverage. Tarr was taken to Canonsburg General Hospital for treatment. Blood was drawn to determine his alcohol level. Tarr was released to his mother. Charges are pending the toxicology report, police said.

Tarr’s vehicle was heavily damaged and had to be towed. Hutter, whose eyeglasses were damaged in the crash, was able to drive the sport utility vehicle.
