MCKEESPORT, Pa. (AP) — A former Allegheny County police officer has been charged in a fatal hit-and-run accident.
Police say 64-year-old Timothy Tatters of White Oak was arrested Friday morning.
Authorities allege that Tatters struck 56-year-old Lorraine Wilkes with his Jeep Cherokee at about 4 a.m. Wednesday morning. She died soon afterwards at a local hospital.
Investigators say that Tatters told them he thought he hit a dog, though Wilkes reportedly weighed about 320 pounds.
Tatters was charged with an accident involving death, a felony, and careless driving, according to court documents.
No attorney was listed on court papers and Tatters couldn’t be reached for comment.
Police say Tatters retired from the force in 1993.
