A Trinity elementary school student, who was suspended from school after allegedly threatening another student two weeks ago, will return to class today, but some parents are planning to keep their children home.
Dr. Paul Kasunich, Trinity’s superintendent, met with about 15 parents of second-grade students at Trinity East Tuesday to inform them the student would be returning to school. Kasunich had promised to meet again with parents after an initial meeting the day after the student had threatened another child.
Doug Hrabik said he would not be sending his children to school today and that other parents also had planned to keep their children home.
“They are putting procedures above safety,” Hrabik said.
Kasunich told the parents the student had undergone an extensive evaluation and would return to school.
He said a plan was in place to monitor the child, but he would not divulge details of that plan.
“We feel very strongly that the plan we have in place and the process we followed is correct and students are safe,” he told a reporter after the meeting Tuesday.
The boy was suspended from school after allegedly telling another student he would use one of his father’s guns to kill him. Two weeks ago, a third party verified that the guns had been removed from the home and parents of the boy are cooperating with the school district, Kasunich said.
But Hrabik said parents were not told, due to privacy reasons, if the boy is on medication, if he will have a counselor or an aide to accompany him, or if the firearms are back in his home. Hrabik intends to pursue the matter in other ways, he said.
