CARMICHAELS – Carmichaels Area School Board took action on several administrative personnel matters Wednesday, including voting to advertise for an assistant principal and approving an administrative compensation plan.
The board, which held an hour-long executive session before starting the meeting, approved a motion to advertise for an assistant principal. No discussion was held on the motion. Superintendent Craig Baily said later that the board is now only looking at the possibility of hiring an assistant principal. It “wants to see who is out there and what they could possibly offer the district,” he said.
Baily said the matter is being considered because of possible future retirements or administrative realignments, but he declined to be more specific. The board also approved a three-year Act 93 administrative compensation plan effective July 1 through June 30, 2016. Under the plan, each administrator accepts a wage freeze the first year and for the second and third years receives a salary increase totaling $5,000.
Business manager Amy Todd explained the five administrators will receive different amounts the second and third years, but the total salary increase for those two years for each is $5,000.
The plan covers junior-senior high school principal John Menhart, assistant junior-senior high school principal David Bates, elementary principal Robyn Cole, technology administrator Mark Batis and maintenance supervisor David Franks.
The board also voted to appoint Menhart acting assistant superintendent. Baily said this was done to permit Menhart to serve as superintendent when he is out of the district. Menhart will be paid a $1,000 stipend for the 2013-14 school year for the additional duties.
The board voted to advertise for a construction manager to oversee the district’s proposed school renovation project. The board also voted to hire Joanna Walker as an assistant band director and Don Happe as an assistant girls basketball coach. The board approved three booster-funded band trips for the 2013-14 school year, including a performance at a Steelers game, at a date to be determined; a performance at a West Virginia University football game, also at a date to be determined; and a competition at the Buckwheat Festival in Kingwood, W.Va., on Sept. 26.
