Mt. Morris man pleads guilty to charges
A Mt. Morris man was sentenced Monday to 5 years in the Greene County Intermediate Punishment Program after pleading guilty to drug charges and burglarizing the State Line Inn and its attached residence on separate dates last year.
Joshua Matthew Marchsteiner, 22, of 466 Davistown Road, was arrested at a Perry Township residence Nov. 8 for an outstanding warrant related to a robbery at the inn April 12, 2012. At the time of his arrest, Marchsteiner received additional charges for being in possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was also charged with two counts of burglary, criminal trespass, two counts of theft by unlawful taking, criminal mischief and simple assault. A robbery with a threat of bodily injury charge was dropped prior to court.
Catherine Jean Mangan, owner of the inn, told police she heard her dog begin to bark loudly and then run to the back of her residence on April 12. Mangan said she looked up from where she was seated and saw a man pointing a gun at her. According to police, Mangan said the man was dressed all in black with a mask covering part of his face. Mangan told police the man walked toward her, pointing the gun and said, “Give me your money or I’ll shoot.” Mangan gave the man three money bags containing $700, according to police. It was determined the robber had used a ladder to gain entry through a window.
Marchsteiner was familiar to Mangan because he often came to the inn to help his mother, who had been employed there for several years. When police questioned an acquaintance of Marchesteiner, he told them Marchsteiner showed him several bundles of money that he said were taken from the inn. The acquaintance also told police that Marchsteiner showed him a fake .45-caliber gun.
When Marchsteiner was arrested for the outstanding warrant, he told police he had broken into the State Line Inn on two occasions. Mangan had reported the theft of $150 cash from her register on Jan. 19, 2012, by someone who broke a window to access the building.
Marchsteiner told police that he parked his vehicle along the interstate and walked over the hill to the bar where he broke the window to get inside the building.
As a condition of sentencing, Greene County Judge Farley Toothman, ordered Marchsteiner to have no contact with Mangan. He must pay restitution to her in the amount of $1,945 and $700 to the Victims Compensation Assistance Program. He was further ordered to pay fines of $1,350 and perform 250 hours of community service.
Marchsteiner was given credit for 215 days served in the Greene County jail toward his sentence.
