EAST STROUDSBURG (AP) – Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania say a van driver was killed on a mountain road when he crashed into a telephone pole, got out of his vehicle and was electrocuted by a downed power line.

Monroe County Coroner Bob Allen told The Pocono Record that the man was alone in a commercial van at the time of the Saturday evening accident.

He said the van hit the pole near the Smithfield-Middle Smithfield township line and broke it in three places, and wires dropped down beside the vehicle.

Allen said the man, whose name has not been released, then climbed out of the vehicle and stepped on the line. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Pocono Medical Center.

A forensic autopsy on the victim’s body is planned.
