N. Strabane man jailed, accused of assaulting police
A North Strabane Township man apparently angry that a Good Samaritan helping out at a crash scene near his house had parked in his driveway was arrested after he fought with township police officers not once but three times, police said.
William Lee Moody, 71, of 1229 Route 519, also is accused of removing his false teeth and chewing tobacco from his mouth and throwing them at one North Strabane officer.
Moody was arrested on five counts of aggravated assault, two counts of terroristic threats and one count each of obstructing the administration of law enforcement, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
Police were responding to a four-vehicle, chain-reaction crash about 4 p.m. Friday on Route 519 near Wylandville Elementary School. A vehicle had stopped to allow a school bus to exit the school parking lot, but one vehicle traveling behind that car failed to stop, touching off the wreck. Police also said one driver involved in the accident fled.
A woman apparently parked in Moody’s driveway to assist an elderly woman involved in the crash. Moody was described by police as upset and angry when he approached and demanded the vehicle be moved.
Police said he was belligerent and swearing at the woman and at Officer Michael Krocsko. When Krocsko tried to intervene, Moody allegedly continued to swear and started shoving the officer.
When Krocsko told Moody he was under arrest, the man continued shoving and resisting the officer’s efforts, police said, and Officer Matthew Mancini came over to assist Krocsko.
Once Moody was in custody, police say he feigned unconsciousness, and when police removed a handcuff so he could be treated, Moody started swinging his fists, allegedly hitting Krocsko, Mancini and a paramedic who was treating him.
Moody was taken to the police station for a short time before he was prepared for transport to Canonsburg General Hospital, and police say he again squared off against Mancini and Officer Jonathan Miles.
That’s when Moody allegedly pulled out his false teeth and chewing tobacco and threw them at Mancini, hitting the officer in the arm and chest. Police said he then removed his wristwatch and threw it at Miles, hitting him. Moody had to be restrained again, and he also allegedly threatened police.
Moody was arraigned before District Judge Curtis Thompson and was placed in the Washington County jail on a $75,000 percentage bond. A preliminary hearing is slated for Monday before District Judge Jay Weller.
