Beer wholesalers issue warning to Pa. senators

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The third and final Senate committee hearing on liberalizing the sale of beer, wine and liquor has begun with testimony by wholesalers who warn that Pennsylvania’s industry will be hurt if the state issues more beer licenses or takes away shelf space for beer.
The Tuesday hearing is a prelude to a busy June. Gov. Tom Corbett is pressing lawmakers to pass legislation expanding sales of beer, wine and liquor, but a bill that passed the House in March has little support in the Senate.
The committee chairman, Sen. Charles McIlhinney, has said he is leaning toward a plan to allow the state’s approximately 12,000 existing private beer licensees to buy licenses to sell wine and liquor, while allowing beer licensees to sell beer in a wider variety of quantities.
