Luck ran out Sunday morning for a Chartiers Township man accused of stealing scrap metal and other items from storage trailers in Canton Township.

William L. Strawn, 50, of 141 S. Johnson Road, was nabbed after a witness reported a burglary in progress after seeing a red pickup truck parked at a utility trailer at 3070 Jefferson Ave., about 8 a.m.

The witness saw a man, later identified as Strawn, get out of the truck carrying a saw or crowbar. Strawn then entered a utility trailer owned by National Pipe Line. He removed items from the trailer and placed them in the bed of his truck.

Police spotted the truck and stopped Strawn in the 1700 block of Jefferson. In the back of his truck were paint tents, threading set, extension ladder and copper wire.

Strawn was reportedly identified in surveillance video stealing items Wednesday from a locked trailer owned by Waller Corp. of Canton and parked in the lot at Interstate Supply, 1655 Jefferson. Stolen from the trailer were two sets of aluminum stairs, a 32-foot aluminum extension ladder and aluminum brackets.

He also was reportedly caught on video selling the items at a local scrap yard. Police said he received $234 for the items valued at $3,300.

Strawn was arraigned before District Judge Curtis Thompson on charges of burglary, theft, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief and driving under suspension. He was placed in the Washington County jail on $30,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set June 12 before District Judge David Mark.
