Driver faces DUI charge in Canton crash
A Chartiers Township man faces charges including aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence of alcohol stemming from a crash Sunday morning on Henderson Avenue (Route 18) that critically injured a Washington man.
State police said Paul Terry Duty, 68, of 834 Governors Circle, was making a left turn from Regent Drive at Washington Estates trailer park in Canton about 11:05 a.m. His vehicle pulled into the path of a northbound motorcycle operated by 70-year-old William Lutz.
Police said Lutz hit the front bumper and hood of Duty’s car and was thrown from the motorcycle to the pavement.
Duty tried to flee the scene but was stopped by Good Samaritans before troopers arrived, police said.
Lutz, who police said suffered serious injuries to his head and chest, was flown from a landing zone set up by Canton firefighters in a lot off of Hewitt Avenue to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh. He is listed in critical but stable condition late Sunday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.
DUI-related charges will be sent to Duty by summons from the office of District Judge David Mark.
