RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli says an energy company’s contributions to his Republican gubernatorial campaign are not influencing his office’s handling of a natural gas lawsuit.
Cuccinelli issued a lengthy statement Monday to counter the suggestion that donations totaling $100,000 from Consol Energy Inc. to his campaign swayed his office’s involvement in a lawsuit against a company that Consol owns. He said he rejects that suggestion “in the strongest possible terms.”
Cuccinelli responded hours after Democratic Sen. Phillip P. Puckett asked for an independent investigation into the role of the attorney general’s office in the case.
Puckett issued the request after a federal judge said she was shocked an attorney for Cuccinelli’s office was assisting two gas companies in the lawsuit.
