CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – State Police say a trooper shot a Raleigh County man who allegedly fired a weapon at the officer.

State Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Baylous says 63-year-old Gary Richmond is being treated for a gunshot wound to the chest and abdomen.

Baylous says Richmond is expected to be charged with attempted first-degree murder and wanton endangerment upon his release from Charleston Area Medical Center.

Cpl. J. D. Cooper of the Hinton detachment responded to a complaint about someone shooting near the Hinton city limits on Wednesday night. Baylous says Richmond had a revolver when he answered a knock from Cooper at his door.

When Cooper ordered Richmond to put down the weapon, the suspect allegedly fired, narrowly missing the officer. Baylous says Cooper shot back and Richmond collapsed on the floor.
