An employee of the Mel Blount Youth Home in Buffalo Township was injured Wednesday morning when he crashed his all-terrain vehicle while feeding cows on the property.

State police said the 19-year-old man, whose name was not immediately released, suffered unspecified injuries in the crash and was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh-area hospital.

Emergency responders were called to a densely wooded area on the property shortly after 9 a.m. after the ATV apparently rolled down a ravine and on top of the employee.

TiAnda Blount, the youth home’s executive vice president, said the man was out feeding cows when the accident happened. He was responsive at the scene and able to call for help despite being pinned beneath the vehicle, she said. Blount declined to identify the worker.

Another worker was nearby and tried to help the man. He attempted to push the ATV off the worker, but was unsuccessful and had to wait for emergency responders to find the crash site deep in the woods.

“Someone was with him, but they were far behind him,” Blount said. “By the time they got back there, he had already flipped the vehicle. He tried to ask one of the other workers to pull the vehicle off of him. They weren’t able to do that.”

Blount said all of the students at the youth home were in class at the time and unaware of the accident.

“The children had no idea this even happened,” she said. “All of the kids were in class.”

Investigators did not know the man’s condition or the severity of his injuries.
