Washington County Jail Warden John Temas proposed forming an honor guard from the ranks of corrections officers to represent the facility.

Capt. Michael T. King, a shift commander at the jail and former Marine Corps drill instructor, has volunteered to lead 11 corrections officers.

The unit will serve “fallen law enforcement officers and other civil servants” and at community events, Temas told the prison board Wednesday.

Although members of the honor guard would serve on a volunteer basis at no cost to the county, the warden asked that they be paid for approximately two hours of training. Uniforms and equipment would cost about $5,000, the warden said.

Washington County Commission Chairman Larry Maggi, chairman of the prison board, said when he was sheriff, the department had an honor guard. He asked if the group would consider attending the opening ceremony at the Washington County Fair, which begins in mid-August.

Sheriff Samuel Romano, also a member of the prison board, said the sheriff’s department honor guard is an activity that has fallen by the wayside over the years.

The honor guard has been invited to participate in opening ceremonies for Wounded Warrior softball games scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m. Aug. 24 at Lew Hayes PONY Field at Washington Park. The Wounded Warriors will be playing corrections officers from the State Correctional Institution at Greene County at noon and SCI-Pittsburgh at 3 p.m.
