The Meadows made history locally in 1963 as the first parimutuel horse racing track in Western Pennsylvania. But its opening June 28 did not have the national or international significance that these events had a half-century ago:

• Jan. 7: First-class postage rises from 4 to 5 cents

•Jan. 11: First discotheque opens, Whiskey-a-Go-Go in Los Angeles

• Feb. 9: First flight of the Boeing 727 jet

• Feb. 11: Julia Child’s show “The French Chef” premieres on educational TV

• Feb. 20: Giants star Willie Mays signs record $100,000-a-year baseball contract

March 21: Alcatraz federal penitentiary closes

• May 12: Bob Dylan walks out of the “Ed Sullivan Show”

• July 1: ZIP codes are introduced for U.S. mail

• Aug. 28: Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech at Lincoln Memorial

• Oct. 13: “Beatlemania” coined after Beatles appear at Palladium

• Nov. 22: John F. Kennedy, 35th U.S. president, assassinated in Dallas

• Dec. 20: Berlin Wall opens for first time to West Berliners
