Police say a Kentucky man was tripped up Friday when he decided to help himself to a candy bar and new pair of sandals.
Alfred Duane Arnold, 55, of Scottsville, is not only accused of taking those items from Walmart, Trinity Point, but also is suspected of taking more than $18,750 in video games from the store last month.
A loss-prevention officer at the store told South Strabane Township police Friday that he watched Arnold open a wrapper and eat a candy bar. Arnold then went to the shoe department, put on a new pair of sandals and walked around the store.
He allegedly left the store and was stopped by loss-prevention personnel, who said they also found him with a cellphone charger.
Arnold also is suspected of stealing more than 700 items from the store during several trips May 29 and 30, when police say he was caught on video surveillance.
Arnold allegedly removed a child safety seat from a box and took the box back to the store’s electronics department. He reportedly filled the box with video games, each valued at about $20. When the box was filled, Arnold reportedly stole a tote bag and filled that.
Police said Arnold repeated the actions three times over a three-hour period. He also allegedly broke a lock on a case containing the video games, which are valued at about $65 each.
Police said surveillance showed Arnold getting into what appeared to be a gold station wagon with tinted windows. The driver of the car never entered the store.
Arnold has been banned from Walmarts in other states.
Arnold was arraigned before District Judge Joshua Kanalis on charges of two counts each of defiant trespass and felony retail theft. Kanalis denied bond to Arnold because he already is on bail stemming from charges in Kentucky. Arnold was placed in the Washington County jail pending a July 2 hearing before District Judge Jay Weller.
