CLYMER – State police were searching for the person who fatally shot a man on a rural walking trail shortly after the victim left a party.

James Alexander, 46, of Ernest, was found shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene Monday night, according to troopers from the barracks in Indiana.

Alexander was on the trail in Clymer, about 50 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, when a person reported hearing gunshots. Alexander had left the party at a friend’s house to take a walk shortly before the shots were reported about 9:20 p.m.

Police do not believe Alexander was a random target, though they’ve not said why they believe that.

“I think it was definitely a situation where the individuals knew each other,” District Attorney Patrick Dougherty said.

An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday, but it appeared the cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the head.
