WIND RIDGE – A Wind Ridge man who allegedly threatened to kill his father and was shot in the leg when he attacked his father Sunday at his father’s home has been charged by state police with terroristic threats, harassment and simple assault.
Charges were filed against Richard J. Riley, 38, of 342 Gunn Hill Road after he was shot by his father, John W. Riley, about 1 p.m. Sunday, according to the criminal complaint.
John Riley, who has not been charged, told state police his son had threatened to kill him and was coming at him when he shot him in the leg to protect himself, the complaint said.
Richard Riley was taken to a hospital for treatment though information on his condition was not available. The investigating officer could not be reached Tuesday for comment.
Police were called to a domestic disturbance at Richard Riley’s house involving Richard Riley and his wife, Kristy Riley, the complaint said. Kristy Riley told police her husband had become angry at her for not doing the laundry and had kicked her, causing her to fall into a cabinet and injure her arm.
She told police she and the children went to her father-in-law’s house nearby and shortly afterward her husband came to the house.
John Riley said he told his son to stay away until he calmed down, but his son became angry and threatened to kill him if he did not let him see his children, the complaint said. John Riley told police he was afraid of his son from past physical attacks and retrieved a .22-caliber revolver from the home.
John Riley said he told his son to stay back and when his son came at him he shot him in the leg to protect himself. His son stopped but then continued to advance toward his father, who then shot into the ground in front of his son, which caused his son to turn and leave.
The charges against Richard Riley were filed with District Judge Lee Watson. Richard Riley had not been arraigned as of Tuesday.
