YORK – A former prison inmate has been convicted of aggravated assault but acquitted of attempted murder in a shooting that injured an off-duty corrections officer.

Twenty-two-year-old Craig Lewis Jr. of York will be sentenced next month.

Police said Lewis shot York County Prison guard David Whitcomb in January 2012 outside a bar in Manchester Township after an altercation inside the bar spilled outside.

Authorities say the guard had worked in the same cell block in which Lewis had been housed on a previous drug charge.

Defense attorney Bill Graff vowed an appeal Wednesday. He said his client didn’t recognize Whitcomb and denied that he had a gun or shot the victim.

He said “Our argument is, they got the wrong guy.”

Prosecutors said they had no doubt that Lewis was responsible.
