PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh’s oldest seafood market has suddenly closed.
Benkovitz Seafoods in the Strip District held a rummage sale Tuesday that surprised even the building’s owners, who didn’t know the firm planned to close.
The market was first opened in 1916 under the name “Live Fish.” It grew to supply customers throughout the region, but the Benkovitz family sold the business in 2007.
The store’s website didn’t have any explanation for the closing, but the volume of business had reportedly declined in recent years.
