PITTSBURGH (AP) – A winter storm brought heavy snow to parts of Western Pennsylvania overnight, but utilities reported only light power outages and most main roads were clear by Wednesday afternoon.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike issued a weather advisory for travelers to keep alert between the Ohio state line and mile marker 201 eastbound. Some higher elevations in Western Pennsylvania reported up to a foot of snow, but most areas had 4 to 6 inches.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the Philadelphia area and parts of central Pennsylvania through early evening and Thursday morning. Snow was expected to accumulate to 3 to 5 inches, and change to rain at times, with warmer temperatures forecast for Thursday.

FirstEnergy Co. reported about 800 customers without power as of 11 a.m., mostly in the Pittsburgh area, while PECO reported scattered outages in the Philadelphia area.

Pittsburgh schools closed for the day, and many other districts had delays or closures. Schools also were closed across central Pennsylvania, but state offices remained open.

The heaviest snowfall so far was in Western Pennsylvania, but the storm was moving east.
