WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) — A state bridge engineer says the Wheeling Suspension Bridge likely won’t reopen for at least three weeks.

The Division of Highways closed the historic bridge Saturday after a cable on top of the span snapped on the downtown Wheeling side. The cable helps to keep the bridge from swaying.

DOH bridge engineer Dave Sada tells media outlets that rust and corrosion caused the cable to snap. The problem was discovered during a routine inspection of the 164-year-old bridge.

The DOH hasn’t determined how much repairs will cost.
