A Washington County jury found a local man not guilty Thursday of robbing a pharmacy clerk and possessing a controlled substance.

Washington police had charged Nicholas R. Chaney, 27, of 1125 1/2 Bruce St., with presenting a note to the clerk to obtain 20 tablets of Xanax, used to treat anxiety and related disorders, at The Medicine Shoppe, 400 Jefferson Ave., on March 2, 2012.

The jury of nine women and three men spent about two hours in the deliberation room.

Presiding over the trial this week was Judge Katherine Emery, who called for quiet from those who applauded, cheered and sobbed after hearing the announcement of the not-guilty verdicts in Chaney’s case.
