MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia regulators have ordered Noble Energy to cease operations and regain control of an impoundment that overflowed into a tributary of Wheeling Creek.

The Feb. 22 spill near Dallas involved more than 2,200 barrels of brine wastewater.

The Department of Environmental Protection said Friday it issued seven violations. They include the failure to follow monitoring and emergency action plans and failure to maintain the pit to minimize environmental harm.

It says Noble also violated state water pollution laws.

Pennsylvania-based Noble must propose plans for sampling and removing contaminated soil and surface waters.

It also must identify wells within 2,000 feet and submit a testing plan, and submit a certified engineer’s report on the structural integrity of the impoundment.

Noble didn’t immediately comment Friday but has previously said it’s cooperating.
