PITTSBURGH (AP) – A Western Pennsylvania labor umbrella group has declined to endorse a candidate for mayor of Pittsburgh, prompting candidates to say they would seek support from individual unions.

The Allegheny County Labor Council said Friday that none of the candidates was able to muster the two-thirds support needed for an endorsement.

Council president Jack Shea said he thinks that’s because “every time you look at the papers, there’s a new candidate.”

Seeking the nod were councilman Bill Peduto and controller Michael Lamb, the only declared candidates, as well as council president Darlene Harris and former auditor general Jack Wagner.

Several others considering a run didn’t apply for an endorsement from the labor council, which represents about 100,000 union members.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl announced earlier this month that he won’t seek re-election.
