CARMICHAELS – Carmichaels Borough Council, at a brief meeting Tuesday, voted to donate $500 to the local fire company and announced police will be stepping up traffic enforcement in the town square.

Council had received a request for a donation from Carmichaels-Cumberland Township Volunteer Fire Company for the company’s fund drive.

Council voted to donate $500 to the company from the $16,972 it received last year from the state in Act 13 natural gas drilling impact fee revenue.

Councilman John Paletta asked whether the borough currently provides money to the fire company. Borough secretary Brandi Streit said the borough pays the company $180 a month and covers the borough’s share for workers compensation insurance, which last year was about $3,600.

Councilman Ralph McWilliams made a motion to make the $500 donation, which was approved unanimously.

Council has not yet decided how it will spend its Act 13 money. Members met in a workshop meeting following Tuesday’s regular meeting to discuss the matter.

McWilliams also raised the issue of motorists not yielding the right of way at town square to vehicles in the traffic circle. He noted the problem was particularly bad on the East George Street entrance to the circle.

Yield signs have been posted at entrances to the circle. Police Chief Mike Gyurke said he will step up enforcement and violators could face a fine and costs totaling $115.

Gyurke also introduced Bryan Bird, the borough’s new constable.
