Canonsburg begins search for manager
Canonsburg Council has a pool of about two dozen applicants to sort through in its quest for a new borough manager.
Council is looking to find a replacement for Terry Hazlett, current borough manager, whose retirement takes effect April 30. Hazlett is leaving after 11 years.
The deadline for applications was Friday. However, some job hunters expressed interest in the position immediately after rumors began to circulate about Hazlett’s leaving. Hazlett’s retirement was approved by council in February.
While all the applications are in, council Chairman John Bevec said no time frame has been set for a final selection.
“We are diligently working on that task,” Bevec said.
To be eligible for the position, an applicant must possess a bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in public administration/government or business. They must also have three to five years’ work experience in municipal government or transferable experience and skills in a progressively responsible position.
The job description also calls for candidates to possess effective communications skills, be proficient in the use of office computer technology and demonstrate leadership working with council and mayor, employees, residents, civic groups, boards and commissions and other governmental agencies.
The borough manager will be responsible for supervision and administration of all borough operations.
The borough has not released the salary for the new manager. Hazlett’s salary is $65,000 annually plus benefits.
Council is being assisted by the Department of Community and Economic Development Governor’s Center for Local Government Services.
