Penn State to put $20 million into online academy

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State University is funneling $20 million into its online learning academy and hopes to nearly quadruple enrollment.
The university wants enrollment in its World Campus to go from the current 12,000 to 45,000 within the next decade. Penn State President Rodney Erickson says the $20 million to be invested was generated by World Campus through its tuition.
It offers programs including master’s in business administration and bachelor’s in psychology and is aimed at mid-career adults. World Campus Executive Director Wayne Smutz says the money will go toward technology, gathering analytical data and start-up costs to hire new faculty.
World Campus had 41 students in five academic programs when it started in 1998 and now offers more than 90 different degrees.
