A flagger for the state Department of Transportation working on a project on Fourth Street in Monongahela Wednesday morning was hit by a pickup truck.

Ernest Crawford, no age or address or available, was working when he was hit by the truck driven by Valerie Vestrat of Monongahela about 7:30 a.m., said city police Chief Brian Tempest.

Vestrat told police she had turned off First Street to Fourth and did not see the flagger. She told police the sun was in her eyes.

Another PennDOT worker told police traffic had been stopped in both directions so a piece of equipment could be moved. He also told police the truck was traveling slowly.

Crawford was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment of a possible leg injury. A hospital spokeswoman said he was in fair condition Wednesday afternoon.
