WAYNESBURG – The Waynesburg Area Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund Committee announced Wednesday that the 23rd annual $1,500 scholarship will be presented to Jessica Black, 18, of West Greene High School. Black, daughter of William and Melissa Black of Holbrook, plans to attend Waynesburg University and major in nursing.

This scholarship, the 23rd for the chamber, is presented each year to a Greene County senior who plans to attend a college, university or trade school. The scholarship is awarded based on a 500-word essay. The theme of the essay this year was “If you had the power to change one thing in your community or world, what would it be and why.” Applicants must have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least a 3.0 to be eligible for consideration.

This year, 33 applications for the scholarship were received by the chamber. The committee had a difficult task of selecting one winner from the qualified field of candidates. The chamber would like to thank the 14 judges who participated in the selection process and the 33 students who applied.

The scholarship will be presented at the chamber’s quarterly membership networking luncheon at noon May 22. Black and her family will be honored guests and she will read her winning essay. The luncheon will be held at the new Hampton Inn in the Greene Plaza in Waynesburg and is sponsored by Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week, a program of the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education.

The luncheon is open to the public. Reservations are required and may be made by calling the chamber office at 724-627-5926 by May 20. The cost is $15.
