WAYNESBURG – Southwest Project Grass will host a Field Day May 16 in partnership with the Greene and Washington County Conservation Districts. The Field Day is open to the public and costs $6 to attend. Reservations are required by May 13.

The Field Day will begin at 10 a.m. at Log Cabin Fence Co. in Amity. A brief business meeting will be held, followed by a discussion on fencing and other related equipment and a demonstration of the Portable Cattle Handling Facility by the Pennsylvania Center for Beef Excellence.

Lunch will be served at noon, and a pasture walk will take place on the Amwell Township farm of Bill Iams. Highlighted best management practices will include heavy use areas, a manure stacking facility, a rotational pasture system and deer fencing around alfalfa fields. A representative from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service also will be available to discuss farm bill programs.

Greene County is one of 14 member counties of the Southwest Project Grass chapter. Project Grass promotes improved pasture and rotational grazing systems for better forage production, quality and utilization. The coordinating committee meets bimonthly and includes county Conservation District staff and agricultural producers.

To reserve space for the Field Day, call John Hewitt of the Washington County Conservation District at 724-705-7098, or email jhewitt@pawccd.org.
