Scrabble team excels at tournament
Students from Waynesburg Central Elementary School, Margaret Bell Miller Middle School and Waynesburg Central High School once again participated in the Fayette Invitational Regional Scrabble Tournament at California University of Pennsylvania May 3.
The tournament is an annual event sponsored by the law firm of Davis & Davis. Students from Central Greene, Brownsville, West Greene, Avella and Uniontown school districts competed in the event.
Of the 13 Central Greene Scrabble team members competing, eight brought home first-place trophies.
First-place trophies went to Makenzie Barchiesi, third grade; Luca Augustine, fourth grade; Ray Behm, fifth grade; Bailey Fudala, sixth grade; Branden Sanders, eighth grade; Lily Behm, ninth grade; Hannah Gibbons, 10th grade; and David O’Donoghue, 12th grade. Other team members included Olivia Sanvicente, Mary Larkin, Amber Warren, Kalem Nabors and Devin Mowry.
Scrabble is a game that involves strategy and benefits students academically in the areas of spelling, word recognition, vocabulary development, computation, decision making, risk taking, good sportsmanship, fair play and social skills.
