ERIE (AP) – Police have arrested a suspect after a teacher’s aide was shot while walking near an elementary school in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Police have not identified the suspect or the victim, who was shot Friday about 10:20 a.m. near McKinley Elementary School in Erie, where she went inside for help.

The Erie Times-News reports the school has been locked down, but Deputy Chief Randy Bowers says students were never in danger. A county 911 dispatcher tells the Associated Press the lockdown is precautionary only.

All other schools on the city’s east side were also being locked down as a precaution.

Police didn’t immediately return calls about the suspect, who was at the police station.

The victim was treated by paramedics in the school’s office before being taken to a hospital, where her condition wasn’t immediately available.
