MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (AP) — State police say a sport utility vehicle driver has died of injuries sustained in a four-vehicle crash on a central Pennsylvania interstate involving three tractor-trailers that killed his wife.

Trooper Rod Hicks, a state police spokesman, said 63-year-old George Weed succumbed to his injuries just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

Weed was driving an SUV north on Interstate 81 shortly after 4 p.m. Friday when traffic began to slow due to a traffic backlog in Cumberland County’s Silver Spring Township. One tractor-trailer was unable to slow down in time and hit the SUV, sandwiching it into another tractor-trailer, which then hit another truck.

Authorities said 64-year-old Kathleen Weed of Pittsford, N.Y., was pronounced dead at the scene Friday. The three tractor-trailer drivers had minor injuries.
