The Washington County Farm Bureau and 4-H Clubs collected 12,700 pounds of food, paper products and other household supplies during its recent two-month drive.
4-H Club members compiled the bulk of the total food and other products, weighing in at 8,928 pounds.
“My goal was 11,000 pounds,” said Don Carter, Washington County Farm Bureau coordinator of the American Farm Bureau campaign known as “food check-out.”
The week of Feb. 17-23 marked the period this year by which the average American family has earned enough disposable income to pay for its food supply for the entire year.
The Washington County commissioners recognized Carter earlier this month for his volunteerism. “We had a lot of participation from the private sector,” Carter said, thanking all who donated.
“Vegetable production is coming on, which lasts into November, followed by the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays,” Carter said, noting that the food drive fills the gap between the New Year and the arrival of the growing season.
Lisa Nuccettelli, food bank executive director, said, “The Washington County Farm Bureau food drive is perfectly timed to help the food bank stock the warehouse for the summer, when school meal programs end and low-income families suddenly have more meals to provide. We’re grateful to the farm bureau and to Don Carter for all the time and effort put in to organizing this food drive each year.”
