WAYNESBURG – The former family court coordinator in the Greene County prothonotary’s office will be charged with stealing more than $600 from the office during the past year.

Becky M. Cain, 34, of 211 Second Ave., Crucible, will face charges of theft and tampering with public records, according to a criminal complaint prepared by Waynesburg patrolman Robert Toth.

Cain is accused of voiding receipts for cash that was paid to her at the prothonotary’s office between March 12, 2012, and Feb. 14 of this year.

An internal audit conducted by the Greene County controller’s office indicated $615 was missing, the complaint said.

According to the complaint, the $615 in voided receipts were completed through Cain’s computer, which could be accessed only by Cain’s fingerprint, or through the “community computer” to which others had access.

The voided receipts through the community computer were initialized by the employee completing the transaction.

Customers with receipts listed as voided were contacted. Receipts they had in their possession did not have “void” on them, indicating a payment was received, the complaint said.

Cain was questioned about the audit by Toth. She did not dispute her initials were on the voided receipts, the complaint said.

In regard to those completed through her computer, Cain told police someone else could have used her computer while she was out of the office.

Police said Cain said she did not remember taking the money though she offered pay it back.

Prothonotary Susan White declined comment on the matter. Cain had been employed in the office for about five years and was apparently terminated following completion fo the audit.

The charges will be filed with District Judge Lou Dayich of Waynesburg.
