A female miner was taken by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital Thursday morning after being struck in the jaw by an 84-inch steel drill bit extension at the BMX Mine in East Finley Township.

The woman’s name and condition were not immediately known, said Lynn Seay, spokeswoman for Consol Energy, owner of the mine. She said the accident was reported at 7:15 a.m. and an ambulance was called. An investigation is under way.
